The IWR is one of 54 federally designated water institutes created under the Water Resources Research Act of 1964, and supported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS)
The National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) retrieves and disseminates statistical and geographic information system (GIS) boundary data for the United States. It covers US history from 1790 to the present. The site also features GIS-compatible boundary data in shapefile format. All data are available free of charge through the NHGIS website, although users must register to download data.
