Formatting FAQ

Here's a quick overview of the most popular ebook file formats. This list was compiled from Wikipedia's much more extensive list of ebook formats.

  • EPUB: The most common and widely supported ebook format. It is not supported by Kindles, BUT conversion software is available.
  • AZW: Created by Amazon and only compatible with Kindles.
  • MOBI/PRC: Similar to AZW. It is supported on Kindles and relies on XHTML and JavaScript.
  • PDF: Short for Portable Document Format. Created by Adobe and compatible with many different platforms. Typically used for documents with extensive formatting as it preserves the look and feel across platforms.
  • ODF: Short for Open Document Format. XML-based file used in OpenOffice.
  • LRF: Created by Sony and essentially obsolete (Sony now uses EPUB).

Each book can have different terms of use (i.e. lending periods, downloading restrictions, etc)

When your ebook is "due" your digital copy will expire. You will have to re-check it out to resume access.

Ask a librarian if you need help. That's what we're here for!
