Michigan State University: Institute of Water Research
Combining research, education, technology and outreach capabilities, the Michigan State University Institute of Water Research (IWR) is committed to addressing our most pressing water problems and providing smarter water management for a multitude of stakeholders. The IWR is one of 54 federally designated water institutes created under the Water Resources Research Act of 1964, and supported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The IWR also receives ongoing support from MSU AgBioResearch and MSU Extension, and is a member of the National Institutes for Water Resources.
Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SENDAC): Poverty Mapping
This site hosts the Global Poverty Mapping Project, which "seeks to enhance current understanding of the global distribution of poverty and the geographic and biophysical conditions of where the poor live." Provides data in a variety of ways that will appeal to an array of learners and researchers interested in obtaining and using information about poverty, food security, and inequality.
Illinois Natural Resources Geospatial Data Clearinghouse
This site provides access to Illinois GIS data sets and documentation (metadata) for ArcIMS Interactive Map Services, USGS digital topographic maps, aerial photography, orthoimagery, orthophotography, geology, land use, natural resources, and infrastructure. Illinois data sets and map data layers are available for download free of charge.

The National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) retrieves and disseminates statistical and geographic information system (GIS) boundary data for the United States. It covers US history from 1790 to the present. The site also features GIS-compatible boundary data in shapefile format. All data are available free of charge through the NHGIS website, although users must register to download data.
The National Map: Data Download and Visualization Services
This site is run by the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) and offers free data downloads, user defined datasets, acquisition of data from different hosts, elevation point and profile tools and a tutorial.
