What's in a Name? The Names and Places of Alverno College

Alexia Hall

Alexia Hall, Alverno's newest building

Alverno's newest building, Alexia Hall opened its doors in January 2015. It was built to house Fine Arts studios for dance and the visual arts, an Art Gallery, nine additional classrooms, and the Nursing Clinical Education Center. The center provides nursing students with five state of the art clinical simulation rooms to enhance nursing skills, technique, and learning.

Alexia Hall was named for Mother Alexia Hoell, co-foundress of the first School Sisters of Saint Francis congregation in the United States and considered the first president of Alverno College. She saw the need to educate future teachers which was realized with the creation of St. Joseph Normal School in 1887.  The Normal School later evolved into Alverno Teachers College and, finally, Alverno College. Mother Alexia served the Milwaukee Province of the School Sisters of St. Francis until 1907 when she returned to Germany to establish a German Province for the community. Learn more about the accomplishments of Mother Alexia by visiting the exhibit, 130 Years and Counting! Highlights from Alverno's History.
